On Hold | The xx
“It’s really good to see you.”
“It’s really good to see you too.”
That awkward, funny, dreaded, and unexpectedly sweet moment when you run into that person from your past. That moment when a faceless person walking towards on the street comes into focus and has a face…and a name…and a history. That moment when you both decide to take your headphones off and say “hi”.
We stood there making small talk but kept laughing at how uncomfortable and and how not uncomfortable our conversation was.
"It’s really good to see you.”
“It’s really good to see you too.”
It’s funny when you see a person’s face and it makes you smile. When you hear their voice and feel comfortable. When you remember why you liked someone so much. You remember what made them one of your favorite people. You remember why it was so hard to cut them off.
“I’d love to get a drink sometime and find hear about your new job.”
After years of knowing someone, when you delete them from your phone it’s because you want to disconnect from them. When you tell them to never reach out to you again, it’s because you don’t want to feel tethered to them anymore. You do these things because you know without doing them there’s a chance, the smallest chance, you wont be able to completely distance yourself. That you won’t be able to truly end something….but just put it on hold.
“Yeah…………I’m sure I’ll email you and we’ll make that happen.”
You do all of those thing to avoid moments like this.
