A Tattered Line of String | Postal Service

A Tattered Line of String | Postal Service

Ok. I’ve been having problems with this track for weeks now. And it makes me a little sad.

I remember getting a little excited and nervous about The Postal Service coming out with a new album. They had such a distinctive sound when they first came out. But so much of its distinctiveness was due to when they were making music. It was a time when electronic music wasn’t massively listened to. And this hybrid sound that Dntel and Ben Gibbard put out was really exciting for girl who grew up in the town of electronica and found herself in the city of indie rock.

The Postal Service was like that like boy you meet, when you move to a new city, who helps that new place make sense to you. He didn’t grow up where you grew up, but somehow you speak the same language. He takes you to these hidden places he knows you’d like, and each time he takes your hand, he makes you feel at home.

But this new track is like seeing that boy again years later. After you’ve moved from city to city, he finds you on Facebook and suggests you get together next time you’re home. You’re excited and nervous about seeing him. But when you do it’s a bit of a let down. And it’s nothing to do with him. He’s great. Just as great as he was before. Just as sweet and fun and attentive as he was when you first met. It’s a bit of a let down because you’ve changed.

Because after moving from city to city you just don’t speak the same language anymore. And although he’ll always be the boy that made a new city feel like home. You know that from now on he’ll always feel a little foreign to you.
