Airplanes - Local Natives
The most magical moment of Outside Lands happened at the Local Natives show.
‘Airplanes’ was the first track I ever heard by them. I remember hearing that track on a bus or a train and thinking the lyrics told the most beautiful story.
I thought I shared ‘Airplanes’ back when I first started this music project in 2012
(pause)
HOLY SHIT! I’ve done this music project for 10 years?!?! I didn’t even realize it!
Wow.
Fuck.
Yeah.
(unpause)
But when I looked back at all the tracks I wrote about this wasn’t on there. Because I found and shared this track way before then:
This track struck a chord with me then. But seeing them play it live, hit me in a whole different way.
Back when I first heard this song, my dad was still alive.
And hearing it now gave it a whole different meaning.
On Saturday, at the Lands End stage at outside lands, I sang every lyric of this song with a smile on my face.
Until I sang these lines:
“I bet when I leave my body for the sky the wait…the wait will be worth it.”
And then I cried.
“I love it all. So much I call. I want you back”
And cried.
“Back”
And cried.
“Back”
And cried.
“You Back”
Dancing, smiling, and singing in the sun with tears streaming down my face.
THOSE are the moments I live for.
THOSE are the moments that capture the essence of why I love music.
THOSE are the moments that move me write about music (…for apparently 10 years)
Because those are the moments I want everyone to have
Because those are the moments that change our lives.
